Letter, [1860] June 14, Down, Bromley, Kent addressed to My dear Sir.

Holograph, signed. Written from his home Down House, near Bromley, Kent, where he moved in 1842. Dated by his reference to the illness of his daughter Henrietta [Etta] Darwin. Discusses the offer of seeds by his correspondent to Dr. [Joseph Dalton] Hooker of Kew Gardens; relates difficulties over a projected French translation of his On the Origins of Species [a French translation did not appear until 1862]; notes recent French reviews in Revue des Deux Mondes and Bibliographie Universelle. Darwin also comments on his influence with young men, tells of the illness of his daughter and his own ill-health, and refers to a future British Association meeting in Oxford.

Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. His father, Robert Waring Darwin (1766-1848), was a physician, the son of Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), a poet, philosopher, and naturalist. Robert established a successful medical practice in Shrewsbury where he was known for his kindness extended to the poor.
